EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored copperplate stipple engraving, titled "Banded Grunt and Squirrelfish," is a stunning example of the intricate detail and artistry found in the works of Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin, one of the greatest French botanical illustrators of the 19th century. The illustration, published by Batelli e Figli in Florence, Italy, in 1837, is from Antoine Laurent de Jussieu's "Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali," or "Dictionary of Natural Sciences. The illustration depicts two marine species: the Banded Grunt, Pomadasys furcatus, and the Squirrelfish, Holocentrus ascensionis. The Banded Grunt, also known as the Common Grunt or the Yellowgrunt, is a popular food fish found in the Atlantic and Caribbean. The Squirrelfish, also known as the Sanddiver or the Sand Terapon, is a common reef fish with a distinctive elongated snout and barbels. The illustration was drawn by Jean Gabriel Pretre and engraved by Corsi under the direction of Turpin. The stipple engraving technique used in this illustration involved the application of tiny dots of ink to create shading and texture, resulting in a highly detailed and lifelike image. The hand-coloring adds an additional layer of beauty and realism to the illustration. Turpin's illustrations were renowned for their accuracy and artistic merit, making them invaluable resources for scientific research and conservation efforts. This particular illustration is a testament to the skill and dedication of Turpin and his collaborators, and a reminder of the rich natural history heritage of Italy and Europe during the 19th century.
