EDITORS COMMENTS
Azorina vidalii: A Rare Beauty on the Brink of Extinction This handcoloured lithograph showcases the enchanting Azorina vidalii, a critically endangered plant belonging to the Campanulaceae family. The image is taken from the seminal work "Flore des Serres et des Jardins de l Europe" (Flowers of the Gardens and Hothouses of Europe) by renowned Belgian botanists Louis van Houtte and Charles Lemaire, published in Ghent in 1851. The Azorina vidalii, also known as Campanula vidalii, is native to the Azores, a volcanic archipelago located in the North Atlantic Ocean. This delicate plant is characterized by its bell-shaped, violet-blue flowers, which bloom in late spring and early summer. The plant grows in rocky, volcanic areas, making it well-adapted to harsh conditions. Unfortunately, the Azorina vidalii is currently listed as critically endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Its population is estimated to be fewer than 1,000 individuals, primarily due to habitat destruction and fragmentation, as well as competition from invasive species. This beautiful botanical illustration serves as a reminder of the importance of preserving the world's rare and endangered plant species. It is a testament to the dedication of botanists like Van Houtte and Lemaire, who documented these plants for posterity and raised awareness about their conservation. Today, efforts are being made to protect the Azorina vidalii and its habitat, including the establishment of protected areas and the implementation of conservation programs. Let us hope that future generations will continue to marvel at the beauty and rarity of this enchanting plant.
