EDITORS COMMENTS
This hauntingly beautiful aquatint print depicts the memorial plaque located on the wall facing Omaha Beach in Normandy, commemorating the brave British Commando raid that took place on September 12, 1942. The raid, led by Major Gus March-Phillips and a force of eleven men from the British Small Scale Raiding Force, aimed to gather intelligence and disrupt German defenses in preparation for the Allied invasion of Europe. The Commando team landed on the beach under cover of darkness but came under heavy German fire as they approached the shore. Tragically, two members of the team were shot during the raid, and Major March-Phillips was drowned. All three men are now buried in Normandy, their sacrifice a testament to the bravery and determination of the Allied forces during World War II. The aquatint technique used in this print captures the mood and atmosphere of the scene, with its soft, tonal shading and intricate details. The muted colors and textured surface add depth and dimension to the image, making it a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made during the 2nd World War. The memorial plaque, with its simple yet powerful inscription, serves as a reminder of the human cost of war and the importance of honoring those who gave their lives in the name of freedom and democracy.
