This stunning handcoloured lithograph depicts the Antlion, Palpares libelluloides, also known as the Doodlebug or Myrmeleon torridum. The Antlion is a unique and intriguing insect belonging to the family Myrmeleonidae, which is part of the order Neuroptera, or net-winged insects. The Antlion's most distinctive feature is its larval stage, which resembles a small, spider-like creature with a large, concave pit in the center of its back. This pit, or lair, is used as a trap to capture prey. The Antlion larva lies in wait, camouflaged among the sand or soil, and when an unsuspecting prey comes into contact with the pit, the larva rapidly contracts its body, drawing the prey into the pit and immobilizing it with sticky secretions. The adult Antlion, as shown in this beautiful lithograph, is a slender and graceful insect with large, transparent wings. Its body is elongated and slender, with long, delicate legs. The wings are held flat against its body when at rest, giving it a distinctive appearance. This exquisite handcoloured lithograph is from the new edition of Dru Drury's Illustrations of Exotic Entomology, published by Bohn in London in 1837. The illustration was produced by the skilled hand of John O. Westwood, a renowned English naturalist and illustrator.
