EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcoloured lithograph depicts two exquisite hummingbird species native to the Caribbean: the Antillean Crested Hummingbird (Orthorhyncus cristatus) and the Ruby-topaz Hummingbird (Chrysolampis mosquitus). The image is taken from Th. Lejeune's Complete Works of Buffon, published in Brussels in 1837. The Antillean Crested Hummingbird, also known as Buffon's Hummingbird, is a small bird with iridescent green and purple feathers, a distinctive white patch on its chest, and a prominent crest on its head. This species is endemic to the Greater Antilles and is the largest hummingbird in the region. They are known to feed on nectar from various flowers, especially those with red or orange hues. The Ruby-topaz Hummingbird, on the other hand, is a medium-sized hummingbird with brilliant ruby-red feathers on its chest, head, and back. The males have a black mask around their eyes, while the females have a white belly and a green back. This species is found in the Lesser Antilles and is the most common hummingbird in the region. They are known to feed on nectar from a wide range of flowers, including hibiscus, bougainvillea, and heliconia. The intricate details and vibrant colors in this lithograph are a testament to the skill of the artist and the high-quality production techniques of the time. The image captures the essence of these beautiful birds and their unique characteristics, making it a valuable addition to any ornithology collection.
