EDITORS COMMENTS

This exquisite hand-colored copperplate engraving, titled "Amaranthus species and related genera," is an elegant and intricate representation of six distinct Amaranthus species and one related genus, as depicted in Professor Filippo Arenas' seminal work "La natura e cultura dei fiori fisicamente esposta" (The nature and culture of flowers physically displayed), published in Palermo, Italy, in 1771. The engraving showcases the captivating beauty of Amaranthus hypochondriacus, also known as Prince's Feather Amaranth, with its delicate, feathery inflorescences. Adjacent to it lies Amaranthus caudatus, commonly known as Love-Lies-Bleeding Amaranth, characterized by its long, cascading red or purple bracts. Amaranthus retroflexus, or Redroot Pigweed, is depicted in the lower left corner, easily recognizable by its distinctive red stems and curled leaves. The engraving also features Amaranthus caudatus var. tricolor, commonly known as Tricolor Amaranth, which boasts striking purple, white, and green bracts. Two other related genera are also included in this illustration: Amaranthus' close relative, Gomphrena, is represented by Gomphrena globosa, or Globe Amaranth, which features compact, spherical inflorescences. Lastly, Amaranthus cruentus, a species with significant cultural importance in Mexico, is shown as an inset at the bottom right corner. This stunning engraving provides a glimpse into the natural beauty and diversity of the Amaranthus family, showcasing their unique characteristics and intricate details. The meticulous hand-coloring adds depth and vibrancy to the already impressive copperplate engraving, making it a true masterpiece from the 18th century.
