EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite hand-colored copperplate stipple engraving showcases the enchanting Alpine azalea, Loiseleuria procumbens, as it was beautifully captured in the 19th century. The illustration, drawn and directed by the renowned French botanical illustrator Pierre Jean-Francois Turpin (1775-1840), was published in the esteemed 'Dizionario delle Scienze Naturali' or 'Dictionary of Natural Science' in Florence, Italy, in 1837. Turpin, a master of his craft, is celebrated for his meticulous attention to detail and exceptional artistic abilities. The Alpine azalea, a small, mat-forming shrub native to the mountains of Cuba, is depicted in full bloom, its vibrant, rosy-pink flowers adorning the lush, green foliage. The engraving technique, a labor-intensive process involving the application of tiny dots to create shading and texture, adds depth and dimension to the image. Surrounding the azalea, one can find various intriguing creatures native to Cuba. Among them are the Cuban hutia (Capromys pilorides), a rodent with a prehensile tail, and the Desmarest's capromys (Capromys desmarestii), a large rodent with a distinctive white stripe on its back. The Utia or Cuban solenodon (Utia arnoldi), a mammal belonging to the order of solenodontids, is also illustrated. These fascinating creatures, along with the Alpine azalea, serve as a testament to the rich biodiversity of Cuba during the 19th century. This image, a product of the collaboration between Turpin and the esteemed publisher Batelli e Figli, offers a glimpse into the natural history of a bygone era, providing a valuable record of the flora and fauna of Cuba during the 1800s.
