EDITORS COMMENTS
All-heal, Valeriana officinalis, is a perennial herbaceous plant belonging to the Caprifoliaceae family, native to Europe and parts of Asia. The common name "All-heal" refers to its traditional use in herbal medicine for treating various ailments. This beautiful chromolithograph, created by Walther Müller and published in Hermann Adolph Koehler's Medicinal Plants, edited by Gustav Pabst in 1887, provides a detailed and accurate representation of the plant's appearance. Valerian is easily identified by its tall spikes of small, white or pink flowers, which bloom in the summer. The plant can grow up to 80 cm (31 inches) tall and has a distinctive, unpleasant odor. The root and rhizome of the valerian plant have been used medicinally for centuries to treat conditions such as anxiety, insomnia, and nervous agitation. The active compounds in valerian, including valerenic acid and valeric acid, are believed to have sedative and anxiolytic properties. The botanical illustration captures the intricate details of the valerian plant, from the textured surface of its leaves to the delicate petals of its flowers. The use of chromolithography, a printing technique that involves the transfer of an image from a series of lithographic stones, allows for a high level of detail and vibrant colors. This print is not only a valuable resource for botanical and medical research but also a stunning example of the artistry and craftsmanship of 19th-century botanical illustration.
