EDITORS COMMENTS
This poignant memorial, titled "Liberation," stands proudly on a plinth in the heart of Aalst, Holland. Designed by Karel Zilstra and unveiled in September 1994, the sculpture depicts three human figures triumphantly rising from the confines of a straightjacket, symbolizing the town's liberation from German occupation. The memorial is situated in a quaint little park, a serene and fitting location for such an important tribute. Aalst holds a significant place in the annals of World War II history. Approximately 600 meters north of the memorial, a small stream called the Tongelreep played a pivotal role in the town's liberation. On September 18, 1944, the armored cars of the German 88mm weapons were delayed near the stream, providing an opportunity for the Allied forces to advance. While the German forces were held up, members of the Allied Squadron HQ, waiting in Aalst, were surprisingly finding time for leisurely activities, including getting haircuts in a nearby shop, as per an after-battle report. The streets around the memorial bear the names of the resistance workers, paying homage to their courage and sacrifice. This small, dramatic memorial serves as a powerful reminder of the resilience and determination of the people of Aalst during the dark days of occupation and the ultimate victory of freedom and liberation.
