EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph print, dating back to 1906, showcases the unique and intriguing historical landscape of Neutral Moresnet, a small Belgian-Prussian condominium situated between present-day Belgium, Germany, and the Netherlands. The central feature of this territory, marked by the Vaalserberg, connects it to a quadripoint shared with the Dutch Province of Limburg, known today as the Three-Country Point. Prior to Belgian independence in 1830, Neutral Moresnet was a Dutch-Prussian condominium. The borders of this territory held significant importance during this period, as they marked the meeting point of three distinct European nations. In this image, we can see the territorial claims of three monarchies: King Leopold II of Belgium, Emperor Wilhelm II of Germany, and Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands. During the First World War, Neutral Moresnet was annexed into Germany, although the Allies did not recognize the annexation. This photograph, therefore, offers a glimpse into a time when the borders of Europe were in flux, and the balance of power was shifting. This intriguing map, with its meticulous detail and clear labeling, provides a valuable historical record of a unique and fascinating period in European history. The complex web of borders and territories depicted in this image serves as a reminder of the intricate political landscape that once existed in Europe, and the ongoing importance of understanding the historical context of our world.
