EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite 18th century drawing depicts the majestic Macropus giganteus, commonly known as the Eastern Gray Kangaroo or Pattagorang. The elegant and graceful marsupial is a native of Australia and is the largest living species of kangaroo, with adults reaching up to 6 feet in height and weighing up to 200 pounds. The drawing, possibly by Thomas Watling (1762-c. 1814), is part of the Thomas Watling Drawings Collection held at the Natural History Museum. Dated between 1788 and 1797, this illustration provides a fascinating glimpse into the natural history of the Australian continent during the early European exploration period. The Eastern Gray Kangaroo is characterized by its long, powerful hind legs, which enable it to move with remarkable speed and agility. Its gray fur, which is a mix of gray and brown hues, provides excellent camouflage in its wooded habitat. The kangaroo's large ears and long, bushy tail serve multiple functions, including thermoregulation, communication, and balance. Marsupials, such as the Eastern Gray Kangaroo, are a unique group of mammals that carry their young in a pouch. This drawing provides a detailed and accurate representation of the kangaroo's anatomy, including the pouch and the young joey, which is visible inside. The Macropodidae family, to which the Eastern Gray Kangaroo belongs, is one of the largest families of mammals, with over 70 species. The Diprotodontia order, which includes macropodids and other marsupials, is characterized by their two-pronged molars, which are adapted for grinding plant material. The Macropodiformes order, which includes macropodids and other hopping marsupials, is further distinguished by their powerful hind legs and their ability to hop long distances. This drawing is a testament to the beauty and diversity of the natural world, and it continues to inspire wonder and fascination in viewers today.
