Huts Puerto Rico

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures a glimpse into the past of Puerto Rico's Taíno heritage, with a scene of traditional Native huts nestled amidst lush greenery, circa 1900. The Taíno people, the indigenous inhabitants of the Caribbean, were the first known inhabitants of Puerto Rico, arriving around 2500 BC. By the time this image was taken, their population had been significantly reduced due to European contact and diseases. The huts in the photograph are built using natural materials such as palm leaves, wood, and thatch, and are designed to withstand the tropical climate. The Taínos were skilled farmers, fishermen, and hunters, and their communities were typically located near water sources. The huts were communal living spaces, with each family having its own individual sleeping area. Despite the passage of time and the encroachment of European civilization, remnants of Taíno culture continue to persist in Puerto Rico. Their influence can be seen in the island's language, music, and traditional crafts. Today, efforts are being made to preserve and promote Taíno heritage, including the establishment of the Taíno Cultural Center of Puerto Rico and the recognition of Taíno Day on November 19th each year. This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the rich history and resilience of the Taíno people, and the importance of preserving and celebrating the cultural diversity of our world.
