EDITORS COMMENTS
Abu Simbel, Nubia (1876) is a captivating pencil and watercolor drawing by the English artist Elijah Walton. Walton, born in 1833, traveled extensively through Egypt and Nubia, documenting his journey with detailed and evocative sketches and watercolors. This particular work, created in 1876, depicts the awe-inspiring temples of Abu Simbel, located in southern Egypt on the western bank of Lake Nasser. The drawing captures the grandeur and majesty of the temples, which were carved out of the sandstone cliffs during the reign of Pharaoh Ramesses II in the 13th century BC. The larger of the two temples, dedicated to Ramesses II and his queen Nefertari, is depicted in the foreground, with its massive statues of the pharaoh and the gods standing guard. The smaller temple, dedicated to the goddess Hathor, is visible in the background. The use of pencil and watercolor techniques in this drawing brings out the intricate details of the temples' carvings and the textures of the sandstone cliffs. The white paper provides a stark contrast to the dark outlines and rich colors of the drawing, creating a sense of depth and dimension. Abu Simbel was a significant site of ancient Egyptian culture and religion, and Walton's drawing serves as an important historical record of its beauty and significance. The temples were relocated in the 1960s to prevent their submergence due to the construction of the Aswan High Dam, and they continue to be a popular tourist destination today. This drawing offers a glimpse into the past, transporting us back to a time when these temples stood in their original location, surrounded by the desert landscape of Nubia.
