December 1840: A Historic Procession through Paris - Mary Evans Picture Library presents an evocative image of a pivotal moment in French history. In this 1840 photograph, sailors from the ship Belle-Poule carefully carry the remains of Napoleon I, the legendary French military and political leader, onto a carriage. The scene unfolds on the banks of the Seine River, as the sun casts a soft glow on the Parisian landscape. Napoleon Bonaparte, who ruled as Emperor of the French from 1804 until his abdication in 1814, had been exiled to the island of Saint Helena in the South Atlantic Ocean since 1815. Following his death on May 5, 1821, his body was preserved and eventually transported to France for a grand funeral. The remains were brought to Paris on the Belle-Poule, a French naval frigate, and were met with an outpouring of public emotion. The sailors, dressed in their uniforms, display a solemn reverence as they handle the ornate casket, which is adorned with gold and intricate designs. The carriage, pulled by horses, awaits to transport the remains to Les Invalides, a military complex and national monument in Paris, where they would be interred in the grand dome of the church of the Dôme des Invalides.
