The Nao Saint Mary was a carrack, a type of large, square-rigged ship commonly used during the Age of Discovery. Columbus set sail from Palos, Spain, on August 3, 1492, with three ships in his fleet: the Nao Santa Maria, the Pinta, and the Niña. The Nao Santa Maria was the largest of the three, measuring around 31 meters in length and carrying a crew of approximately 50 men. As Columbus navigated the Atlantic Ocean, he relied on the skills of his experienced sailors and the latest cartography to guide him towards the East Indies. However, after landing on an island in the Bahamas on October 12, 1492, Columbus and his crew discovered an entirely new world. The Nao Santa Maria played a crucial role in Columbus's expedition, serving as a home base for the explorers as they established temporary settlements and explored the newly discovered lands. However, the ship met an unfortunate end when it ran aground and was destroyed in January 1493. Despite this setback, Columbus continued his journey, eventually returning to Spain in March 1493, bringing with him news of the New World and its abundant resources.
