Mrs Leeming hoping to become 1st woman to fly Channel
Mrs Leeming, hoping to become the first Englishwoman to cross the Channel in an aeroplane with Lieutenant Lawrence. Lawrence had made his first solo flight in the Blackburn at the end of January, and had decided to make his Channel attempt from Eastbourne. On the flight to Eastbourne he encountered engine trouble and was forced to land on the seashore. The aircraft was taken back to St Anthonys airfield for a complete engine overhaul. On the 30th March Lawrence took the machine out on a test flight but damaged the undercarriage on landing. Three days later Gustav Hamel took Miss Trehawke Davies in her newly purchased two-seat Bleriot monoplane and flew to France to give her the honour of being the first English lady to cross the Channel by aeroplane, rather than Mrs Leeming. The Tatler describes Mrs Leeming as an all-round sportswoman being especially fond of driving and riding as well as shooting. Date: 1912

In this evocative photograph, Mrs Leeming, an all-round sportswoman with a passion for driving, riding, and shooting, is seen hopeful and determined as she prepares for her historic attempt to become the first Englishwoman to fly across the English Channel. Accompanied by Lieutenant Lawrence, who had recently made his first solo flight in a Blackburn monoplane, they set out from St. Anthony's Aerodrome in Eastbourne, England, with the Channel as their ultimate destination. However, fate had other plans. During their flight to Eastbourne, Lawrence encountered engine trouble, forcing an unscheduled landing on the seashore. The aircraft was subsequently taken back to St. Anthony's for a complete engine overhaul. Meanwhile, the race to be the first English lady to cross the Channel by aeroplane was heating up. On March 30, 1912, Lawrence took the machine out for a test flight but unfortunately damaged the undercarriage upon landing. With time running out, Gustav Hamel, a French aviator, seized the opportunity and, on March 31, took Miss Trehawke Davies in his newly purchased two-seat Bleriot monoplane to France, thus securing the title for her. Despite this setback, Mrs Leeming's spirit remained undeterred.
