EDITORS COMMENTS
In this enchanting Edwardian portrait, Emma Alice Margaret Asquith, Countess of Oxford and Asquith, also known as Margot Asquith, is captured in a tender moment with her youngest child, Anthony Asquith. Born on February 2, 1864, Margot was an Anglo-Scottish socialite, author, and wit, who married the future Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, H.H. Asquith, in 1894. The couple went on to have two surviving children, Anthony and Peter. The photograph, taken in 1903, showcases the Countess's radiant beauty and maternal affection as she cradles her baby son in her arms. Dressed in elegant Edwardian attire, with a delicate lace collar and a flowing skirt, Margot exudes an air of refinement and grace. Her dark eyes are fixed on her son, Anthony, who gazes back at her with a curious expression, as if in awe of his mother's love. Margot Asquith was renowned for her sharp wit and charisma, and her salon at 14 Carlton House Terrace became a hub of London society. Her literary works, including "Souls," were published under the pseudonym "Margot Asquith, Countess of Oxford and Asquith," and her writings often reflected her observations of high society and her own experiences as a mother and wife. Anthony Asquith, born on May 15, 1902, would go on to become a leading film director, directing classics such as "Pygmalion" and "The Browning Version." This photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the close bond between mother and son, and the enduring love and affection that transcends time.
