EDITORS COMMENTS
In this striking photograph from July 1941, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Sweeny are seen attending the American Society's Luncheon at the prestigious Dorchester Hotel in London. The elegant couple, with Mrs. Sweeny, the former Miss Margaret Whigham, looking radiant in her dress, were the proud parents of Robert Sweeny, a golfing brother-in-law who served in the American Eagle Squadron. The Squadron, founded by Mrs. Sweeny's father, Mr. and Mrs. George Hay Whigham, was a vital organization that provided American pilots to the Royal Air Force (RAF) during World War II. An unidentified officer of the Eagle Squadron sits between the couple, adding to the sense of camaraderie and patriotism that defined the era. According to another photograph from The Tatler that year, Charles Sweeny Jnr. also joined the Eagle Squadron as a Pilot Officer, making this family's connection to the Squadron even more profound. The Sweeny family's involvement in the Eagle Squadron was a testament to their unwavering support for the Allied war effort during a pivotal moment in history. This portrait captures the spirit of wartime society, showcasing the resilience, elegance, and determination that defined the era.
