Bare Beautiful Bellbird Exotic Hummingbird Kirby Lands Mexicanus Ornithology Throated Trogon Tropical Vulnerable Elizabeth

EDITORS COMMENTS
This chromolithograph showcases two exquisitely beautiful and vulnerable bird species native to tropical forests in Central America: the Mountain Trogon (Trogon mexicanus) and the Bare-throated Bellbird (Procnias nudicollis). The image is taken from "Beautiful Birds in Far-Off Lands," a natural history book written by Victorian sisters Mary Kirby (1817-1893) and Elizabeth Kirby (1823-1873). Published in London by T. Nelson in 1872, the book was an essential addition to the growing body of knowledge on the world's avian wonders, particularly for children. The Mountain Trogon, with its iridescent green and blue plumage, is perched on a tree branch, its beady eyes scanning the surrounding forest for prey. The Bare-throated Bellbird, a striking contrast in colors, is depicted flying above, its vibrant red chest and black and white plumage creating a breathtaking sight. Both birds are considered vulnerable due to habitat loss and fragmentation, making their preservation crucial. The intricate details of the birds' plumage and the lush, tropical forest setting are expertly captured in this chromolithograph. The technique used, which involved the transfer of multiple colors from lithographic stones to a single plate, allowed for a high degree of detail and accuracy. The result is a stunning visual representation of these exotic and fascinating birds, which continues to captivate the imagination and inspire a sense of wonder and appreciation for the natural world.
