Moscow Uprising - Damage to buildings

Between 5th and 7th December, there was a general strike by Russian workers. The government sent in troops on 7th December, and a bitter street-by-street fight began in Moscow. A week later the Semenovskii Regiment was deployed, using artillery to break-up demonstrations and to shell workers districts. On 18th December, with around a thousand people dead and parts of the city in ruins, the workers surrendered. After a final spasm in Moscow, the uprisings ended in December 1905. This postcard shows damage to the Presnia District during the uprising. Date: 1905

Damage Moscow Revolution Ruined Shell Uprising December

EDITORS COMMENTS
This haunting postcard image captures the devastation wrought upon the Presnia District in Moscow during the Russian Revolution of 1905. Between 5th and 7th December, Russian workers staged a general strike in protest against the living and working conditions, and the government's response was brutal. On 7th December, troops were sent in to quell the unrest, leading to bitter street-by-street fighting. As the situation deteriorated, the Semenovskii Regiment was deployed on 18th December, using artillery to break up demonstrations and to shell workers districts. The ensuing violence left around a thousand people dead and large parts of the city in ruins. In this photograph, the destruction is evident as buildings lie in shambles, their facades blown apart by artillery shells. The once vibrant and bustling streets now stand silent and desolate, a poignant reminder of the tragic events that unfolded during this pivotal moment in Russian history. The uprisings eventually ended on 18th December 1905, leaving a deep scar on the city and its people.
