Born in 1754, Lewis was a veteran of the French and Indian War, where he gained a reputation as a brave and capable soldier. His military career continued during the American Revolution, where he served as a colonel in the Pennsylvania militia and later as aide-de-camp to General John Forbes. After the war, Lewis turned his attention to politics, serving in various capacities in both the Pennsylvania Assembly and the Continental Congress. In 1789, Lewis was appointed as the first United States Marshal for the Western District of Pennsylvania, a position he held until his retirement in 1801. As the federal government struggled to collect taxes on whiskey, Lewis led a militia of over 13,000 men to put down the rebellion, ensuring the authority of the federal government and paving the way for a stronger centralized state.
