EDITORS COMMENTS
Morgan Lewis: A Pioneering American Soldier and Statesman (1754-1844) This evocative portrait captures the distinguished visage of Morgan Lewis, an influential American soldier and statesman who played a pivotal role in shaping the early history of the United States. Born in 1754, Lewis was a veteran of the French and Indian War, where he gained a reputation as a brave and capable soldier. His military career continued during the American Revolution, where he served as a colonel in the Pennsylvania militia and later as aide-de-camp to General John Forbes. After the war, Lewis turned his attention to politics, serving in various capacities in both the Pennsylvania Assembly and the Continental Congress. He was a strong advocate for states' rights and was instrumental in securing the ratification of the Articles of Confederation. In 1789, Lewis was appointed as the first United States Marshal for the Western District of Pennsylvania, a position he held until his retirement in 1801. Despite his many accomplishments, Morgan Lewis is perhaps best known for his role in the Whiskey Rebellion of 1794. As the federal government struggled to collect taxes on whiskey, Lewis led a militia of over 13,000 men to put down the rebellion, ensuring the authority of the federal government and paving the way for a stronger centralized state. This portrait, captured in later life, serves as a testament to Morgan Lewis's enduring contributions to American history. His bravery on the battlefield, his commitment to the principles of states' rights, and his leadership during the Whiskey Rebellion all helped to shape the young nation and cement his place in American history.
