Monastery, Vallombrosa, Tuscany, Italy

" SHOULD you be in Florence in the summer, visit Vallombrosa, one of the greatest natural curiosities in Tuscany, though Milton mentions only an ordinary circumstance, that of the fall of the leaves in autumn. You will be astonished the whole way at the boldness of the scenery : - and not least, the mountain itself which looks proudly down on all that surrounds it. San Giovanni Gualberto founded the convent in the midst of woods on top of the Appenines, inhabited by wolves and bears; it has now become one of the pleasantest spots in Tuscany. A forest of chesnut leads you to a forest of firs, and you at length arrive at the convent, situated on a delightful lawn, enclosed in an amphitheatre of wood." - Beckford Letters. Date: 1904

EDITORS COMMENTS
Discover the enchanting beauty and rich history of Vallombrosa Monastery in Tuscany, Italy, as depicted in this photograph from 1904. Nestled amidst the mountainous terrain of the Appenines, this monastery was founded by Saint John Gualberto in the midst of a forest teeming with wolves and bears. The scenic route leading to the convent is a feast for the senses, with a forest of chestnuts giving way to a forest of firs. The proud and majestic mountain, looking down upon the surrounding landscape, adds to the awe-inspiring atmosphere. Saint John Gualberto, the founder of the Vallombrosan Order in 1038, chose this secluded location to establish a monastic community dedicated to prayer, contemplation, and the study of Scripture. The monastery, situated on a delightful lawn enclosed in an amphitheater of wood, is a testament to the perseverance and dedication of its founders. This hidden gem in Tuscany, though mentioned only in passing by the poet Milton as an ordinary occurrence of autumn leaves, is a natural curiosity that continues to captivate visitors from around the world. Step back in time and immerse yourself in the history and tranquility of Vallombrosa Monastery, a place where the beauty of nature and the power of faith converge.
