EDITORS COMMENTS
Mme Deshoulieres, born Antoinette Du Ligier on February 15, 1638, was a prolific French writer and literary figure of the 17th century. This evocative portrait captures the intellect and sophistication of this remarkable woman. Mme Deshoulieres rose to prominence in the literary world during the reign of Louis XIV, contributing significantly to the development of the novel genre in France. Her works, which often explored themes of love, morality, and social commentary, were widely read and admired by her contemporaries. Born into a noble family, Mme Deshoulieres was well-educated and fluent in several languages, including Italian, English, and Spanish. She married Jean-Baptiste de Deshoulieres, a diplomat, in 1660, and the couple had five children. Mme Deshoulieres' literary career began in earnest after her husband's death in 1672, when she published her first novel, "La Princesse de Clèves," anonymously. The novel was an instant success and established Mme Deshoulieres as a major figure in French literature. Mme Deshoulieres went on to write numerous other novels, including "La Vraie Histoire du comte de Gabalis," a work that explored occult themes and caused controversy due to its explicit content. She also wrote plays, essays, and translations, solidifying her reputation as a versatile and innovative writer. Despite her literary success, Mme Deshoulieres faced criticism and censure from some quarters due to the controversial nature of some of her works. However, she remained undeterred, continuing to write and publish until her death on January 23, 1694. Today, Mme Deshoulieres is remembered as a pioneering figure in French literature, whose works continue to be studied and admired by scholars and readers alike.
