EDITORS COMMENTS
This portrait showcases Miss Sarah Benett (1850-1924), a courageous and dedicated figure in the British suffragette movement. Miss Benett's commitment to women's rights began when she joined the Women's Social and Political Union (WSPU) in the late 1800s. In March 1907, she was among the many suffragettes arrested and imprisoned for their activism. However, her passion for women's freedom did not wane, and she left the WSPU upon the formation of the Women's Freedom League in 1907. Miss Benett wholeheartedly supported this new organization and its initiatives, including the Tax Resistance League. Despite her departure from the WSPU, Miss Benett's dedication to the cause did not falter. In fact, she eventually rejoined the WSPU and participated in another significant demonstration – the infamous Black Friday demonstration in November 1910. During this event, hundreds of suffragettes marched towards Parliament to present a petition to the Chancellor of the Exchequer, leading to widespread arrests and violence. Miss Bennett, as the Hon. Treasurer of the Women's Freedom League during this time, continued to champion the cause for women's suffrage through various means. This powerful image serves as a testament to her unwavering commitment and the pivotal role she played in the history of the suffragette movement. Dated circa 1908, this portrait is an essential piece of historical documentation that captures the spirit and determination of a pioneering woman who fought for women's rights and the achievement of votes for women.
