This portrait depicts Antonio de Mendoza (1450-1552), a pivotal figure in the early colonial history of Mexico and Peru. Born in Spain, Mendoza rose through the ranks of the Spanish bureaucracy to become Viceroy of New Spain, a position he held from 1535 to 1549.
