EDITORS COMMENTS
Plate 193 from John James Audubon's renowned work, "Birds of America," features the Lincoln's Sparrow (Melospiza lincolnii), a native bird species of North America. This exquisite print, created between 1831 and 1834, is an original double elephant folio, hand-coloured aquatint engraving, printed and colored by R. Havell (& Son) of London. The Lincoln's Sparrow is depicted perched gracefully on a branch, surrounded by a variety of bog vegetation. The cornaceous and ericaceous plants in the background include dogwood (Cornus spp.) and cloudberry (Rubus chamaemorus), both common in wetland habitats. The Lincoln's Sparrow is a member of the Emberizidae family, order Passeriformes, class Aves, and is an eudicot, angiosperm in the asterid clade. Its scientific name, Melospiza lincolnii, reflects its connection to the Lincoln family, as it was first discovered during Thomas Lincoln's expedition in 1824. The Lincoln's Sparrow is a medium-sized sparrow with a distinctive brown stripe over its eye and a yellow patch under its tail. It is named for its distinctive song, which sounds like a lisp or a "lin-col" call. This bird is typically found in wetland habitats, including marshes, swamps, and bogs, and feeds primarily on insects and seeds. This stunning print not only showcases the beauty and intricacy of the Lincoln's Sparrow but also highlights the rich biodiversity of North American wetlands during the daytime. The cloudy day depicted in the background adds an element of mystery and intrigue, making this a truly captivating work of art.
