EDITORS COMMENTS
Maximilian I, Holy Roman Emperor (1459-1519), is depicted in this stunning chromolithograph from Jakob Heinrich von Hefner-Alteneck's "Costumes, Artworks and Appliances from the Middle Ages to the 17th Century," published in Frankfurt in 1889. The print captures the emperor in a full suit of armor, complete with a plumed helmet, armored horse, and coat of arms. Maximilian's coat of arms features the five golden quails, a symbol of the House of Habsburg, which ruled the Archduchy of Austria during his reign. Maximilian's armor, adorned with intricate silver fesses and red fields, reflects the advanced metallurgy and craftsmanship of the late Middle Ages. The detailed woodcut, reminiscent of the works of Hans Burgkmair, showcases the emperor's regal bearing and military prowess. The plume on his helmet adds a touch of elegance and grandeur to the otherwise imposing image. Maximilian I was the last Holy Roman Emperor to lead his troops into battle, and his military campaigns helped to expand the Habsburg territories. He is also known for his patronage of the arts, particularly the development of the woodcut as a medium for printmaking. This chromolithograph serves as a testament to both his military and artistic legacies. The intricately detailed armor, the regal posture, and the rich symbolism of the coat of arms all combine to create a powerful and evocative image of Maximilian I, Holy Roman Emperor, in his prime.
