1766 1826 Deputy Mathieu Montmorency

EDITORS COMMENTS
Mathieu Marie Isidore de Montmorency (1766-1826), a prominent French military commander and deputy, is depicted in this striking portrait. Born into the noble Montmorency family, he began his military career in the French army during the American Revolution, serving under the command of Rochambeau. Montmorency's bravery and strategic acumen were evident in the Battle of Monmouth in 1778, where he led a successful counterattack against British forces. After the war, Montmorency returned to France and continued to rise through the ranks of the military. He served in various capacities in Europe, including in the Italian Wars and the Peninsular War against Napoléon Bonaparte. However, it was his service in the Americas that would earn him lasting fame. In 1803, Montmorency was appointed as the governor of Louisiana by Napoleon Bonaparte. He arrived in New Orleans in 1804 and set about modernizing the colony, implementing reforms in education, agriculture, and infrastructure. Montmorency also worked to expand French influence in the region, negotiating treaties with Native American tribes and establishing trading posts. Despite his successes, Montmorency's tenure in Louisiana was cut short when the United States declared war on France in 1812. He was captured by American forces in 1813 and spent the remainder of the war as a prisoner of war. After his release, Montmorency returned to France and retired from military life. This portrait captures Montmorency in the prime of his military career, with a stern expression and a uniform adorned with the insignia of his rank. The background is simple, drawing the viewer's attention to the subject and his impressive bearing. Montmorency's legacy as a French military commander in America and deputy is a testament to his leadership, strategic prowess, and dedication to his country.
