EDITORS COMMENTS
This engraving portrays Martin Luther (1483-1546), a pivotal figure in European history as a German theologian, priest, and the founder of Lutheranism. Born in Eisleben, Germany, Luther studied at the University of Erfurt before joining the Augustinian monastery in Erfurt in 1505. He was ordained a priest in 1507. In 1517, Luther's ideas began to take shape as he penned his Ninety-Five Theses, which outlined the main tenets of Lutheranism and challenged the Catholic Church's sale of indulgences. This act marked the beginning of the Protestant Reformation. The religious upheaval that followed led to Luther's excommunication from the Catholic Church in 1520. Despite this, Luther continued to spread his teachings, translating the Bible into German and writing numerous works that influenced the course of European history. This engraving, created by Daniel Hopfer in 1523, captures Luther in the prime of his life. Wearing the robes of an Augustinian monk, he gazes intently, his hand resting on an open Bible. The rich colors and intricate details of the print bring Luther's story to life, transporting us back to the tumultuous 16th century. This historical image, taken from the 1885 publication "Historia Universal," offers a glimpse into the life of a man who forever changed the religious landscape of Europe. Luther's legacy continues to resonate, inspiring generations to question, challenge, and seek a deeper understanding of their faith.
