EDITORS COMMENTS
In this striking photograph, Marquis Ito Hirobumi (1840-1909) is depicted in full regalia as the Prime Minister of Japan during the Meiji period (1868-1912). Ito, a prominent statesman and politician, played a pivotal role in modernizing Japan and transforming it into a major world power. The Marquis is dressed in a formal Japanese court robe, known as a "junihitoe," which consists of twelve layers of silk kimono, each with a different design. Over this, he wears a Western-style military uniform with an impressive array of medals, stars, and epaulettes. The sash across his chest bears the insignia of the Order of the Chrysanthemum, the highest order of merit in the Japanese Empire. Ito Hirobumi's political career began in the late 1860s, when he served as an interpreter for the Japanese delegation to the United States. He later became a key advisor to Emperor Meiji and played a crucial role in the modernization of Japan's legal, educational, and political systems. Ito served as Prime Minister twice, from 1885 to 1888 and from 1892 to 1896. This photograph captures a significant moment in Japanese history, showcasing the unique blend of traditional Japanese culture and Western influences that characterized the Meiji period. Ito Hirobumi's leadership and vision helped Japan navigate the complexities of modernization and globalization, paving the way for its emergence as a major world power.
