1755 1793 Antoinette Engraved Le Brun Marie Revolution Vigee Year
EDITORS COMMENTS
Marie Antoinette, the Last Queen of France: A Regal Portrait by Vigee-Lebrun, 1783 Marie Antoinette, born in 1755, was the last queen of France before the French Revolution. Daughter of the Empress Maria Theresa of Austria, she was married to King Louis XVI in 1770, at the age of 14, to strengthen the alliance between France and Austria. This engraving, done by Robert Vigee-Lebrun in 1783, is a year before the events that would ultimately lead to the French Revolution and the downfall of the monarchy. Vigee-Lebrun's portrait captures the essence of Marie Antoinette's youthful beauty and elegance. The queen is depicted wearing a flowing robe of pink silk, adorned with gold embroidery and pearls. Her hair is styled in intricate curls, cascading down her back, and her expression is serene and confident. The background is simple, with a delicate floral motif, drawing the viewer's attention to the queen herself. At the time, this portrait was considered a masterpiece of French art. It was a testament to the opulence and grandeur of the French court, a stark contrast to the austere and somber portraits of the past. However, the portrait would later be seen as a symbol of the excesses of the monarchy, as the French people grew increasingly disillusioned with the royal family's lavish lifestyle. By 1793, the French Revolution had reached its peak, and Marie Antoinette was forced to flee the country, leaving behind her once-beloved Versailles Palace. She was eventually captured and imprisoned, and in 1793, she was guillotined, along with her husband, King Louis XVI. This engraving serves as a poignant reminder of a time long past, a time of opulence and grandeur that would soon be shattered by the forces of revolution. It is a testament to the enduring power of art to capture the essence of a moment in history, and to preserve it for future generations.
