EDITORS COMMENTS
Maria Theresien-Platz, Vienna, Austria: A Timeless Glimpse into Mythological Vienna This photograph, taken by the renowned Austrian photographer Anton Schmidgruber in the 1910s, offers a glimpse into the heart of Vienna's historic Maria Theresien-Platz. The image showcases the iconic Tritons and Naiad Fountain, a masterpiece of mythological art that has graced the square since its unveiling in 1780. The Tritons and Naiad Fountain, located in the center of the plaza, is a stunning display of Baroque sculpture. The fountain features four Tritons, mythical sea gods, and a Naiad, a water nymph, each depicted in intricate detail. The Tritons are shown with the upper body of a human and the lower body of a fish, while the Naiad is depicted as a graceful, nude woman emerging from a large shell. The fountain was designed by the architect Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach and the sculptor Johann Peter Lenassi. It was commissioned by Empress Maria Theresa of Austria to celebrate the city's water supply system. The fountain's intricate design and mythological themes reflect the cultural and artistic richness of Vienna during the late Baroque period. Today, the Tritons and Naiad Fountain remains a beloved symbol of Vienna and a popular tourist attraction. This photograph by Anton Schmidgruber offers a unique perspective, transporting us back in time to experience the magic and wonder of Maria Theresien-Platz in the early 20th century.
