Maria Theresa of Austria, born in 1717, was an influential and powerful monarch who ruled as Queen of Hungary and Bohemia, and Archduchess of Austria. She was the eldest daughter of Emperor Charles VI and was married to her cousin, Emperor Francis I, in 1736. The portrait depicted here is believed to be painted by the French artist, Jean-Etienne Ducreux, around the time of her marriage. Maria Theresa's reign was marked by significant political and military achievements. She inherited her father's territories upon his death in 1740, and faced numerous challenges to her rule, including wars with Prussia and France. Despite these challenges, Maria Theresa proved to be a skilled diplomat and military leader, and was able to maintain her territories and strengthen her dynasty. Maria Theresa was also a devoted mother, giving birth to 16 children, including her famous son, Emperor Joseph II. She instilled in her children a strong sense of duty and responsibility, and they went on to play important roles in European politics. Maria Theresa's reign marked the beginning of the House of Habsburg's dominance in Europe, and her legacy continues to be felt today. She is remembered for her political acumen, her devotion to her family, and her commitment to the welfare of her subjects.
