Born into a noble family, Maria Teresa's life was forever changed when she met and married Rafael in 1811, during a time of great political upheaval in Spain. Together, they became key figures in the Spanish Trienio Liberal, a period of liberal reforms and political instability. Rafael Del Riego is best known for his role in the Trienio Constitucional, a period of liberal reforms in Spain that began in 1820. He led a successful military uprising against the absolutist monarchy, which resulted in the reinstatement of the 1812 Constitution. However, this period of political change was short-lived, and in 1823, the conservative forces, led by the Bourbon monarchy, regained power. Rafael Del Riego was captured and executed, leaving Maria Teresa a widow at the young age of 35. Faced with the threat of persecution, Maria Teresa and her children sought refuge in England. She settled in Chelsea, where she spent the remainder of her days in exile. Despite the hardships she faced, Maria Teresa remained steadfast in her commitment to the liberal cause and continued to advocate for the rights of the Spanish people. Her unwavering dedication to the memory of her husband and the democratic ideals they shared made her a symbol of resistance and hope for those who longed for freedom and political change in Spain.
