EDITORS COMMENTS
Marcus Aurelius: The Philosopher-King of the Roman Empire (121-180 AD) This engraving by J. Serra Pausas, published in Historia de Espana in 1882, showcases the profound wisdom and regal presence of Marcus Aurelius, the Roman Emperor from 161 to 180 AD. Born in the heart of the Roman Empire, Marcus Aurelius was a pivotal figure during the Pax Romana, the era of relative peace and stability in the Roman Empire. Marcus Aurelius was the last of the so-called 'Five Good Emperors' of the Antonine Dynasty, which also included Hadrian, Antoninus Pius, and Commodus. He was not only a skilled military leader but also a renowned Stoic philosopher, whose Meditations have survived to this day as one of the most influential works of ancient philosophy. The image of Marcus Aurelius portrayed in this engraving exudes a sense of calm wisdom and deep introspection, reflecting his philosophical nature. The emperor is depicted in the traditional Roman imperial attire, complete with a laurel wreath, signifying his military triumphs and his status as a god. The background is adorned with symbols of the Roman Empire, including the eagle, the symbol of the Roman legions, and the fasces, a bundle of rods with an axe, symbolizing the power of the magistrate. Marcus Aurelius' reign was marked by military campaigns against the Parthians and Germanic tribes, as well as the devastating Antonine Plague, which killed millions. Despite these challenges, he is remembered for his wisdom, fairness, and his commitment to the welfare of his people. This engraving serves as a testament to his enduring legacy as one of the greatest emperors in Roman history.
