EDITORS COMMENTS

This print depicts the legendary Battle of Marathon, an historic event that took place in Greece in September, 490 BC. The Persian army, led by King Darius Hystaspes, with an estimated strength of 60,000 soldiers, was met with fierce resistance from the combined forces of Athens and Plataea, numbering only 11,000 men under the command of Miltiades. The Battle of Marathon is considered a turning point in ancient Greek history, marking the first time the Greeks successfully defended their lands against the invading Persian forces. The Persian army, which had already conquered much of the Eastern Mediterranean, was expecting little resistance from the Greeks and was taken by surprise by the tenacity and strategic prowess of the Greek forces. The battle raged for hours, with the Greeks holding their ground against the Persian onslaught. The turning point came when the Persian commander, Datis, ordered a retreat, believing that his army had been defeated. The Greeks, taking advantage of the moment, pursued the Persians and inflicted heavy casualties. The victory at Marathon was a significant morale boost for the Greeks and marked the beginning of the end of Persian dominance in the region. The run of the Athenian soldier Pheidippides, who carried news of the victory to Athens, is said to have inspired the modern marathon race. This print captures the heroism and determination of the Greek forces in the face of overwhelming odds, making it a fascinating and important piece of historical art.
