His Majestys Theatre, London

Promotional postcard for His Majestys Theatre, London. The present building was designed by Charles J. Phipps and was constructed in 1897 for actor-manager Herbert Beerbohm Tree, who established the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art at the theatre. In the early decades of the 20th century, Tree produced spectacular productions of Shakespeare and other classical works, and the theatre hosted premieres by major playwrights such as George Bernard Shaw, J. M. Synge, No묠 Coward and J. B. Priestley. Since the First World War, the wide stage has made the theatre suitable for large-scale musical productions, and the theatre has specialised in hosting musicals. The theatre has been home to record-setting musical theatre runs, notably the First World War sensation Chu Chin Chow[1] and the current production, Andrew Lloyd Webbers The Phantom of the Opera, which has played continuously at Her Majestys since 1986. The theatre was set up in 1705 by architect and playwright John Vanbrugh as the Queens Theatre; in 1714 it changed name to the Kings Theatre and has changed name with the sex of the monarch ever since. Date: circa 1900

EDITORS COMMENTS
His Majesty's Theatre: A Grand Stage of Shakespeare, Classics, and Musicals His Majesty's Theatre, located in the heart of London, is a historic and iconic venue that has played host to some of the most memorable productions in the annals of British theatre. The present building, designed by Charles J. Phipps and constructed in 1897, was originally established for actor-manager Herbert Beerbohm Tree. Tree, a visionary figure in the world of theatre, founded the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art at the theatre, and in the early 20th century, produced spectacular productions of Shakespeare and other classical works. The theatre's wide stage made it suitable for large-scale productions, and it became a hub for premieres by major playwrights such as George Bernard Shaw, J.M. Synge, Noël Coward, and J.B. Priestley. Since the First World War, the theatre has specialized in hosting musicals, and its wide stage has proven ideal for these productions. The theatre's storied history dates back to 1705 when it was first set up by architect and playwright John Vanbrugh as the Queen's Theatre. The theatre has since changed names with each new monarch, reflecting the changing times and the enduring tradition of theatre in London. This photograph, taken circa 1900, captures the grandeur and elegance of His Majesty's Theatre in its early days. The theatre's ornate facade, with its intricate details and majestic columns, is a testament to the rich history and cultural significance of this iconic London landmark. From Shakespearean classics to record-setting musical runs, such as the First World War sensation Chu Chin Chow and the current production of Andrew Lloyd Webber's The Phantom of the Opera, which has played continuously at Her Majesty's since 1986, the theatre continues to enchant and inspire audiences with its magical productions.
