EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative photograph captures the scene at Aswan during the Mahdist War in the late 1880s. Aswan, then spelled Assuan, was a bustling market and tourist center located on the east bank of the Nile at the first cataract in southern Egypt. The capital of the Aswan Governorate, Aswan was a vital stop for travelers and traders making their way through the desert. In this image, small boats are moored at the seashore, their sails furled as they wait for their next journey up or down the Nile. The hills in the background provide a stark contrast to the tranquil water and add to the sense of isolation and adventure. The Mahdist War, which lasted from 1881 to 1889, saw the Sudanese Mahdist state, led by the Mahdi Muhammad Ahmad, wage a successful campaign against the Egyptian and British forces occupying Sudan. The conflict came to a head in Aswan, where the Mahdist forces laid siege to the city in 1884. Despite the ominous backdrop of war, life went on in Aswan, with merchants and travelers continuing to ply their trades along the Nile. This photograph offers a glimpse into a bygone era, a time when the desert sands of Egypt and Sudan held both danger and opportunity for those brave enough to venture into the unknown.
