Lyrics Puck Lonesome Lorn

Love-lorn Lyrics of a Lonesome Lad

EDITORS COMMENTS
- A poignant illustration from the February 15, 1911, issue of Puck magazine, capturing the melancholic longing of a man who finds himself alone in a world filled with beautiful women, yet unable to attract a girlfriend. The illustration depicts a solitary man, seated in a worn armchair, with his arms crossed and his chin resting on his chest, lost in thought. His faithful canine companion lies at his feet, offering a silent and unwavering companionship. A small table next to the man is adorned with a tobacco pipe, its smoke curling upwards and revealing the faces of five enchanting young women. These women, however, are not real, but rather the pipe dreams of the man, their visages etched onto the pipe's stem. The haunting lyrics by Breton Braley, penned for this illustration, resonate with the man's plight: "I'm a love-lorn lad, and I don't know the way, To begin the dance, or the words to say, When a girl comes near, I'm as mute as a stone, And my heart beats wild, but my tongue is alone. I'm a love-lorn lad, and I'm lost in the throng, Of the crowd that's gay, and the laughter that's long, But when I look at the girls with their eyes so bright, I'm filled with a longing that's out of sight." This poignant illustration and lyrics continue to resonate with audiences today, as they speak to the universal experience of unrequited love and the longing for connection in a world that can often feel isolating.
