EDITORS COMMENTS
Louise Henriette de Bourbon-Conti, Duchesse d'Orleans (1726-1759), was the first wife of Duc Louis Philippe I of France. Born on February 2, 1726, in the Palace of Château de Chambord, she was the eldest daughter of Louis Armand II, Prince de Conti, a prominent French nobleman. This elegant portrait captures the young and beautiful Louise Henriette, dressed in the fashionable attire of the time, with a delicate lace collar and a flowing, intricately patterned robe. Her expressive eyes and poised posture convey a sense of intelligence, grace, and confidence. Louise Henriette's marriage to Duc Louis Philippe I, the future King Louis Philippe I of France, took place on October 24, 1743, in the Palace of Versailles. The union was a strategic political alliance, as the Bourbon and Conti families were powerful rivals in the French court. Despite the political machinations surrounding their marriage, Louise Henriette and Duc Louis Philippe I shared a deep bond. They had three children together: Louis-Philippe II, Duke of Orléans (1747-1793), Philippe Égalité, Duke of Orléans (1747-1793), and Louise Marie Adélaïde de Bourbon (1753-1821). Tragically, Louise Henriette died on August 27, 1759, at the young age of 33, following a complicated childbirth. Her passing deeply affected her husband, who mourned her loss for the rest of his life. This striking portrait of Louise Henriette, Duchesse d'Orleans, offers a glimpse into the life of a remarkable woman who played a significant role in French history. Her legacy continues to captivate historians and art lovers alike, as a symbol of beauty, grace, and resilience in the face of adversity.
