This charming engraved portrait captures the young Louisa Twining at the age of two-and-a-half, as depicted in a miniature painting by her older sister. Born in 1803, Louisa would later grow up to become a prominent social reformer, dedicating her life to improving the living conditions of workhouse inmates. The daughter of a wealthy British family, Louisa's early life was marked by privilege and comfort. However, her experiences visiting workhouses with her father, who was a magistrate, opened her eyes to the harsh realities faced by the poor and destitute. Moved by the plight of these individuals, Louisa became determined to make a difference. In 1836, Louisa founded the Workhouse Visiting Society, an organization dedicated to promoting better living conditions and providing moral support for workhouse inmates.
