EDITORS COMMENTS
In this elegant photograph, Lord Buckhurst is flanked by his two daughters, Lady Myra Sackville, née Idina Sackville (left), and Lady Avice Sackville, both daughters of Lady de la Warr. Born in 1885, Idina, more commonly known as Lady Idina Sackville, would make headlines for her unconventional life and five marriages, which earned her the surnames Wallace and Gordon, among others. Her first marriage, to Captain Euan Wallace, took place in 1913 but ended in divorce in 1919. Idina's notoriety truly began when she moved to Kenya in 1924 with her third husband, Josslyn Hay, Earl of Errol. Known as the Happy Valley Set, this group of British expatriates was infamous for their debauched decadence. Idina's serial marriages and scandalous lifestyle inspired various characters in novels such as Nancy Mitford's The Pursuit of Love and Love in a Cold Climate, Evelyn Waugh's Vile Bodies, and Michael Arlen's The Green Hat. The photograph, taken in 1903, captures the sisters' youthful beauty and the familial bond between them. Lady Myra, born in 1888, and Lady Avice, born in 1891, are dressed in fashionable Edwardian attire, reflecting the era's grace and sophistication. The image offers a glimpse into their privileged upbringing and the innocence that would soon be overshadowed by the scandals and notoriety that would follow them into adulthood.
