Leo Tolstoy (11 September 1828 – 7 November 1910), one of the greatest Russian writers of all time, is depicted in this 19th century colored engraving titled "Mancastropa" from The Artistic Illustration (1892). In the image, Tolstoy is seen in his austere workroom, surrounded by the simple furnishings and dimly lit by a single candle. The renowned essayist, novelist, playwright, and short story writer, who is often regarded as a key figure in world literature, is deeply engrossed in his writing, his intense focus evident on his aged, lined face. Born into the Russian gentry, Tolstoy served in the army and later studied law before turning to writing.
