EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the legendary Confederate commander, Robert E. Lee, atop his trusted steed, Traveler, during the American Civil War. Born on January 19, 1807, in Stratford Hall, Virginia, Lee rose through the ranks of the United States Army, serving with distinction in the Mexican-American War. However, his allegiance would ultimately shift when Virginia seceded from the Union in 1861, and he was offered command of the Confederate Army. Lee's military genius and unyielding determination made him a formidable adversary for the Union forces. His strategic prowess was on full display during the Seven Days Battles in June and July of 1862, where he inflicted heavy losses on the Union Army under General George B. McClellan. Despite his successes, Lee faced numerous challenges, including the loss of Richmond, the Confederate capital, in April 1865. Despite these setbacks, Lee remained committed to the Confederate cause until the bitter end. On April 9, 1865, he surrendered to Union General Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox Court House, effectively ending the war. Lee's surrender marked the end of the Confederacy and the beginning of a long and painful process of rebuilding the nation. This photograph, taken during the period of Lee's military career, shows him in his element – on horseback, leading his troops into battle. Traveler, his loyal mount, seems to sense the weight of history bearing down upon them, as Lee's steely gaze is fixed on the horizon, the future uncertain but full of possibility. The image serves as a poignant reminder of a pivotal moment in American history, when the fate of a nation hung in the balance.
