EDITORS COMMENTS
This exquisite engraving is a stunning representation of Hyacinthus Orientalis, or the common hyacinth, as depicted in the horticultural masterpiece "Hortus Eystattensis sive diligens et accurata omnium plantarum, florum, stirpium ex variis orbis terrae partibus," published in 1613. The illustration was created by the renowned botanical artist Basilius Besler, who meticulously captured the intricate details of this beautiful flower in the garden of Prince Bishop Johann Konrad von Gemmingen, located in Eichstatt, Germany. The Hyacinthus Orientalis, also known as the Dutch hyacinth, is a bulbous perennial plant that produces vibrant blue, pink, or white flowers during the spring season. This plant was highly valued in Europe during the 16th and 17th centuries for its ornamental value and was often cultivated in the gardens of the wealthy and the aristocracy. The engraving showcases the delicate petals of the hyacinth, each one adorned with intricate veining and a subtle sheen. The central pistil and stamens are also depicted in intricate detail, highlighting the plant's reproductive structures. The background features a simple yet elegant design, drawing the viewer's attention to the beauty of the hyacinth itself. This plate is a testament to the importance of horticulture and botanical illustration during the early modern period, as well as the patronage of the arts by the European nobility. The meticulous attention to detail and the high-quality production of the "Hortus Eystattensis" make it a valuable resource for scholars and enthusiasts of botany and garden history today.
