EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures the stoic and resolute gaze of Lance-Corporal Frederick William Dobson, VC, a brave and unyielding soldier of the Coldstream Guards during the First World War. Born on the 9th of November, 1886, in England, Dobson enlisted in the British Army and was assigned to the prestigious Coldstream Guards regiment. During the First Battle of the Aisne in 1915, Dobson displayed exceptional bravery and leadership, earning him the highest military decoration, the Victoria Cross (VC). The citation for his award reads, "For most conspicuous bravery. When his company was held up by heavy machine-gun fire, he led a charge with 12 men and, though severely wounded, succeeded in putting the machine-gun out of action. He then led his men to capture the enemy trench, and, though almost exhausted, continued to lead them until relieved." Despite his injuries, Dobson's unwavering determination and courage inspired his comrades to press forward, ultimately contributing to the success of the British forces during the battle. Tragically, Dobson succumbed to his wounds on the 15th of November, 1915. His heroic actions and sacrifice have left a lasting legacy in the annals of military history, and this photograph serves as a poignant reminder of the valor and selflessness of the soldiers who fought in the Great War. The Victoria Cross, the highest military decoration awarded for valor in the face of the enemy, was instituted by Queen Victoria in 1856. It is a cherished symbol of British military history and is awarded to soldiers who have displayed exceptional bravery in the presence of the enemy.
