Bathing Burnand Crowds Francis Hotels Lawrence Ostend Panto Pantomime Promotional Resorts Theatrical

EDITORS COMMENTS
Step right up and feast your eyes on the enchanting Lady of Ostend, as captured in this stunning photograph by the renowned artist Francis Burnand. This image was first brought to life on the stage in 1899, produced by Lawrence Broughs touring company at the Bournemouth Theatre on the 19th of June and Terry's Theatre on the 5th of July. The Lady of Ostend was a popular pantomime that showcased the allure of the seaside resort experience. Burnand masterfully portrays the lady as an irresistible element of the coastline, with her graceful pose and captivating expression drawing in the crowds. But as the curtain closed on the production, unbeknownst to the audience, complications were brewing off-stage. The husband of the Lady of Ostend had been unfaithful, and a photograph of him with the lady had been captured on film. As the reels were shown in the cinemas, the scandal spread like wildfire, causing quite a stir amongst the patrons. The once beloved Lady of Ostend was now the talk of the town, and the seaside resort became the center of gossip and intrigue. This postcard is a glimpse into the past, transporting us back to a time when theatre and entertainment were at the heart of popular culture. The Lady of Ostend remains an iconic symbol of the seaside resort experience, a reminder of the allure and excitement that comes with the stage and the screen.
