1933 Broughton Delves Jock

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures Lady Broughton, née Violet Dorothy de la Poer Beresford, in her elegant prime during the 1930s. Born on October 25, 1894, in County Limerick, Ireland, Violet was the eldest daughter of the 7th Marquess of Waterford and his wife, Lady Constance Bulwer-Lytton. In 1918, she married Sir Jock Delves Broughton, a British Army officer and the son of the 1st Baronet of Manton. Their union was celebrated in grand fashion, with a lavish wedding held at the family seat, Lismore Castle. The photograph, taken in 1933, showcases Lady Broughton's timeless beauty and sophistication. Her striking features, including her piercing blue eyes and chiseled jawline, are accentuated by her simple yet elegant attire. The high collar of her blouse and the delicate pearls around her neck add an air of refinement, while her confident posture and enchanting smile radiate an aura of grace and charm. Sir Jock and Lady Broughton's marriage was marked by glamour and high society. They were known for their lavish parties and extravagant lifestyle, often gracing the pages of society magazines. However, their union was not without its challenges. In 1935, Lady Broughton was involved in a highly publicized scandal when she eloped with the American millionaire, Randolph Hearst, leaving Sir Jock and their three children behind. The scandal caused a sensation in the press and marked the end of their marriage. Despite the controversy, Lady Broughton's beauty and allure continued to captivate the public. She went on to marry twice more, but her first marriage to Sir Jock Delves Broughton remains a fascinating chapter in the annals of high society history. This photograph is a testament to her enduring charm and the elegance of a bygone era.
