1692 Anglo Defeats Destroys Hogue Rooke Russel Tourville Vessels Barfleur Fleet

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative print commemorates the pivotal Battle of La Hogue, fought on May 20, 1692, between the Anglo-Dutch fleet under Vice-Admiral Earl of Torbay, Russell, and Admiral Michiel de Ruyter Almonde, and the French fleet under Admiral de Tourville. The battle took place off the coasts of La Hogue and Barfleur in Normandy, France. The conflict was part of the Nine Years' War (1688-1697) between France and a coalition of European powers, including England, the Dutch Republic, and Spain. The Anglo-Dutch fleet, determined to prevent the French from reinforcing their army in Flanders, intercepted the French fleet as it sailed from Brest to join the French forces. The ensuing battle was fierce, with both sides suffering heavy losses. However, the Anglo-Dutch forces ultimately emerged victorious, destroying or capturing 15 French vessels. The defeat significantly weakened the French navy and prevented them from effectively supporting their troops in Flanders, contributing to the eventual Allied victory in the war. This print, with its intricate detail and dynamic composition, captures the drama and intensity of the battle. The smoke-filled sky, the crashing waves, and the intermingling of the fleets create a sense of chaos and conflict. The triumphant British and Dutch flags, raised high above the wreckage, symbolize the victory that was hard-won that day in May 1692.
