EDITORS COMMENTS
In this evocative photograph taken at Ramsgate Town Station in March 1916, a Kent VAD (Voluntary Aid Detachment) ambulance is parked near some buildings, with two sailors carrying a stretcher towards it. A man and a VAD nurse are leaning over the stretcher, tending to the injured patient. Four other men, a mix of service personnel and a hospital patient, are standing nearby. The sailors had come up from Ramsgate Harbour to help when an ambulance train arrived at the station. This image is part of the archive collection related to the Quex Park VAD Hospital, which opened on 15 October 1914 and closed on 31 January 1919. The hospital was run by Kent/178, the Birchington Detachment, and was headed by Commandant Hannah Powell-Cotton, wife of Major Percy HG Powell-Cotton of Quex Park. Major Powell-Cotton served as the VAD Transport Officer for the Isle of Thanet area, responsible for organizing the transport of patients from the stations to the local hospitals. The photograph captures a poignant moment during the First World War, as the community came together to provide care and support for the wounded soldiers. The arrival of the ambulance train marked the beginning of their journey towards recovery, and the dedication of the VAD volunteers ensured that they received the best possible care during their time at the hospital. This image is a testament to the resilience and compassion of the people of Ramsgate during a time of great hardship and adversity.
